With a background as a San Francisco Bay Area professional, Jonathan Vrban has a passion for botany. An avid traveler, Jonathan Vrban particularly enjoys exploring the culture, food, and history of Italy and the Mediterranean. With thousands of years of history behind it, Italy’s Piedmont region is one of its most visited destinations and features a mix of historic cities and picturesque vineyards on the foot of the Alps.
One destination Jon Vrban enjoys is the Baroque capital Turin, which features museums and churches that many consider equal to those of Florence. Fortified under the leadership of Julius Caesar as Taurinorum, the city of Turin has few remnants of its Roman past. These include the amphitheater beside the San Giovanni cathedral and Porta Palatina, which is among the world’s best-preserved Roman city gates. The predominant architectural style dates to the late 1700s, when a trio of architects designed many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Palazzo Reale, Piazza Castello, and the church of San Lorenzo. Turin is also known for the elegant shopping street Via Roma, which features many high-end boutiques and restaurants.
